Organising a successful talk show: 5 tips

A table, some speakers, a presenter and a camera. 3,2,1...action! Organising a talk show may seem relatively simple. Yet there are a lot of behind-the-scenes things you need to get right. How do you make sure the viewer is glued to the screen? These tips will get it right.

The Evening Show with Arjen Lubach, Bar Laat, Eva!, Humberto, RTL Boulevard... all well-known talk shows. What they have in common? A clear format. A concept on paper. Write everything down for yourself: what is the theme of the talk show? And who is the target audience? Then think about the variety. Choose entertainment in between, such as a performance by a band, a video or another interactive element.

Whether the talk show will be a success also depends on the skill of the presenter. Someone who does not let others finish talking, may not be a suitable discussion leader at the table. They need to be able to keep asking questions, sense the right atmosphere and at the same time dare to lead the conversation in an exciting direction.

If you host a talk show where you work with multiple guests, you don't usually put them all at the table at the same time. That means they have to change places halfway through the show. This looks messy on screen. Fortunately, you can also solve this by putting in a performance. Or by showing a 'bumper'; an intermediate clip or animation.

The eye wants something too. And although it is in the name, a talk show is more than just talking. So think carefully about the décor too. And the lighting and the type of table, for example. At Jaarbeurs we have already taken care of this for you. Moreover, the Jaarbeurs Studio has different settings, so you can alternate between talk show and lounge corner.

You can, of course, convert your own space into a studio. Yet that is not wise. Because if you want a professional result, it is smart to also choose a professional environment. An environment where top technology is used and where you get technical support. Jaarbeurs Studio was developed together with our partners EMC Expo and Heuvelman Sound & Vision; every detail has really been thought through.
