Conny Helder, Diederik Gommers and Marcel Levi speaking

Utrecht, 14 June 2023 - Successfully applying innovations to work together on future-proof care is the topic during Zorg & ICT, the largest health tech event in the Netherlands that will take place at Royal Dutch Jaarbeurs until 15 June. With the overarching theme 'In charge of the Future', the second day was dedicated to artificial intelligence (AI). Top speakers such as Conny Helder, minister for long-term care and sport, Prof Diederik Gommers, professor and ICU department head at Erasmus MC, and NWO chairman Marcel Levi entered the main stage today to talk about AI.

Minister Conny Helder: AI is going to help healthcare

"It is no longer a question of whether, but mainly how AI is going to help healthcare. The quality of data is very important here. The Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport is taking the lead in making this better," Minister Helder says. "A lot of the success of this does depend on the quality of the available data." The minister announced that she is working on this with her colleague Minister Kuipers. "We are going to work on the fact that we no longer work with the fax, that not every specialism and every sector has its own hobbies. We are going to go ahead and take more direction on this. Because data exchange, that's just key."

Diederik Gommers: the human touch first

Diederik Gommers followed up the minister with an impassioned plea for the use of AI as a tool for making healthcare choices. "Before I retire, I want an AI model that can give the right advice to the doctor. A model that helps make the right decision to start treatments or not." AI can also help healthcare professionals with other smart applications, thus relieving the burden. "For example, we can ensure that we can make the real connection with patients again; the mango moment. Everything we come up with has to be in the context of the human touch."

Marcel Levi: a little more realism is in order

"A digital transformation in healthcare is underway," argues Marcel Levi. "The promises of big data and personalised medicine still outweigh the achievements. There are positive exceptions, especially in imaging in eye care and oncology. There, computers make doctors' work easier." Aldus Levi. According to Levi, the deployment of big data and AI in healthcare is still between enormous promise and the emperor's clothes. In conclusion, he states, "It's a bit of both. Yes, big data and AI are a huge promise. But a little less hype and a little more realism are in order."

An inspiring content programme

"I am proud that with 150 knowledge sessions and speakers from the top of the healthcare sector, among others, we have put together an inspiring content programme for visitors to Zorg & ICT. There is no shortage of interest. The many healthcare professionals will learn about smart technologies and innovative solutions that contribute to affordable, efficient and future-proof healthcare," says Audrey Wilschut, Zorg & ICT trade fair manager. "Also in the city of Utrecht, together with all partners of the Dutch Health Week, of which Zorg & ICT is a part, we contribute to strong positioning of the Utrecht region as Heart of Health."

Dutch Health Week

For a week from 12 to 17 June 2023, Utrecht will be the place where some fifteen thousand healthcare professionals will participate in twenty healthcare events, making Dutch Health Week the biggest healthcare event in the Netherlands in 2023.

Dutch Health Week is an initiative of Jaarbeurs, which works closely with the municipality of Utrecht, Utrecht Marketing, ROM Utrecht Region, Traiectum Sportcampus, FC Utrecht and numerous other parties.

Care & ICT will take place at Jaarbeurs until 15 June 2023.
