It was not the first time for Inge van Drongelen to organise an event. But that she managed to realise such a large congress for Carend (almost 900 people) almost on her own with owner Sander de Hosson, she had not expected that either. With great enthusiasm and a strong drive to improve lives, she organised a congress on behalf of Carend that was truly unique. We look back with her on the run-up to the event and the day itself: 'We set the bar high and it was a huge success. This gave such a kick!'
'When we decided to organise a palliative care conference, you start by orienting the how, what and where.' Says Inge. 'At Carend, we think outside the box. Our approach is different from mainstream care. We work out topics that people ask for and can relate to. We want to present these offerings so that people listen to each other and can change healthcare together.
So that does not include a standard location. We were looking for a location that is centrally located, with good accessibility. But above all, a location that can inspire people. This was our first major conference on palliative care, so we wanted to kick off the event right away. We therefore chose the Beatrix Theatre of the Royal Dutch Jaarbeurs.'

'We have set the bar extremely high' says Inge. 'We think that's important at Carend. We really have a level we want to offer the participant. Here, we try to think out-of-the-box in terms of speakers: the familiar faces, of course, but also by looking very critically at who else is in the field. A GP who has lung cancer himself, for instance. The setting in the theatre made this extra impressive.'

The conference was a great success, especially for a first time: it exceeded all the organisers' expectations. Inge: 'I said to Sander: if we reach 500 people, I'll be satisfied. We far exceeded that, we had 900 participants in total.'

Inge and Sander organised the conference almost entirely by themselves. In doing so, they did enlist the help of Jaarbeurs account manager Corry Neggers. Inge: 'Corry really wanted us and our guests to have a great day. If she felt I had a certain idea and level in my head, she would give tips on how we could tackle things. She also told me to enjoy it myself and not just breeze through. I really got the feeling that she was running two steps harder for me because I was organising it on my own. I thought that was fantastic. People don't really realise what it is to organise a congress. It's not just a matter of snapping your fingers. It was great that we got that help from Corry.'

She looks back on a great conference. The reactions she received from the participants also make her proud: 'I think it's really great that someone says, "How nice that you did this, what a valuable addition."' Most of the people were extremely enthusiastic, about our topics as well as the location, the food and the Jaarbeurs team. And so was I myself. We had really nice contact with Corry and the technician. It's a business approach, of course, and yet I also got super-human contact out of it. Sander, too, was very satisfied. He said, "This tastes like more." I think he has already approached the first speakers for the next congress.'
