That there is a high workload within education is no secret. Reason enough for ROC Midden Nederland to give its employees a boost and give them a nice day. With the aim of boosting employees' energy and positivity and encouraging a sense of pride in one's work and organisation. At the end of January, 1,300 employees gathered at Jaarbeurss Beatrix Theatre. The ROCMN Bruist Festival was all about developing, meeting and relaxing. 5 questions to Lous Fijan, HRD Advisor Organisational Success at ROC Midden Nederland and Bloeme van Kessel, Senior Event Manager at D&B event marketing.
Lous: "The theme was The makers of society. During the festival, we launched our new positioning which is the "makers of society". We stood together and experienced how important our work is and what a valuable impact we can make on society by educating students and workers. We normally organise learning days for our employees twice a year, but we wanted to do this in a different format. Our organisation consists of several locations, but we are all ROC Midden Nederland. We wanted to radiate that. There is a high workload in education, and the well-being of our employees is important to us. This day is a gift from us, to them.'

Bloeme: 'ROC MN is located in the heart of our country. We were therefore looking for a location that is easily accessible and can accommodate at least 1,200 people. But above all: it had to have cachet. Soon we ended up at Jaarbeurss Beatrix Theatre. There is no other venue in the Netherlands as easily accessible as Jaarbeurs. And the foyer and theatre have exactly the ambiance we were looking for.'

Lous: 'Our employees could choose whether they wanted relaxation or content this day, or a combination. The relaxing part was, for instance, chair massage, having nails painted or joining a silent disco. To broaden knowledge, there were several workshops where we went deeper into specific topics in terms of content. We started and ended with a plenary part, which really created a connection. Our chairman of the Executive Board, Johan Spronk, had an incredibly beautiful story about how important the work we do here is. We are all makers of society. That added to the sense of pride and energy boost. In between, people could choose workshops or meet in the lounge to have a nice chat. It was a very relaxed setting.

Bloeme: 'Very good! As an event manager, I visit many different venues, so I have a lot of comparison material. In our industry, we see a lot of 'hospitality friendliness' - that's a trick. But Jaarbeurs is genuinely interested and friendly. Our contact person Kelly was super involved. She asked through why we made certain choices and thought along to make the event even better. Even on the day itself, everyone was willing to act quickly where necessary. For example, we had not taken down the balcony, but we were unable to get everyone into the room quickly enough. The event manager actively thought along and threw the balcony open anyway, allowing us to start the plenary session on time. It's (little) things like that that make a collaboration nice.'

Lous: 'It was hugely successful. The entire Beatrix Theatre was packed. I remember us looking at the crowds from the Constantijn foyer during registration and thinking: wow, this is really so cool, we just did it. Something can be fantastic on paper, but the question is whether reality matches it. Reactions were very positive, even though education staff are very critical. On average, the festival received a 7.7 and the venue a 7.8! For us, that is very good. So good, in fact, that we are already planning another ROCMN Bruist Festival. We don't know exactly how, what and where yet, but based on the cooperation, we would do it again in no time in Jaarbeurs.'
