Utrecht, 2 October 2023 - Increasingly, high-traffic locations such as garden centres, airports and schools are choosing to take in deposit bottles and cans. So does Royal Jaarbeurs in Utrecht. Anyone who hands in a bottle or can at a collection device at Jaarbeurs can decide what happens to the deposit: either deposit the money directly into your account via Tikkie Terug or donate it to the Prinses Máxima Centre for paediatric oncology.
"At Jaarbeurs, we stand for sustainability and we stick to that in everything we do. We can only achieve a sustainable future together," said Jeroen van Hooff, CEO Royal Jaarbeurs. He continued: "Deposits on cans and plastic bottles are the way to achieve sustainable resource management and reduce litter. At Jaarbeurs, we receive an average of 2.3 million visitors each year. I am therefore pleased that Deposit Money Netherlands is placing two deposit machines at our premises."
Since 2018, Jaarbeurs has been supporting the Prinses Máxima Centre for Paediatric Oncology in Utrecht. One way they do this is by donating the deposit on PET bottles to the centre. With the new deposit machine, visitors have the choice to donate to the Prinses Máxima Centre or get the deposit back via a tap.
More and more intake points
The Netherlands currently has more than 28,000 intake points, including supermarkets, petrol stations and NS stations. Meanwhile, efforts are under way to further expand collection points in other locations. Several schools, amusement parks and garden centres have recently started collecting plastic bottles and cans.
"Locations where many consumers come together are a priority," said Hester Klein Lankhorst of the Packaging Waste Fund Foundation. "An event and conference venue is also such a hotspot. We are therefore pleased that Jaarbeurs is now also collecting deposit bottles and cans. Because the more collection points there are, the easier it is to hand in bottles and cans. We then turn them into new packaging. I sincerely hope that other event venues will soon follow Jaarbeurs 's example. Because broad, national cooperation is essential to make it really easy for consumers to hand in empty deposit bottles and cans and thus build a circular economy together."
Deposit Money Netherlands is in talks with several other busy locations in the Netherlands to help further expand the nationwide network of collection points. Busy locations that would also like to install a free collection machine can contact Deposit Money Netherlands.
