6 tips for organising a sporting event

"What should I think about when organising a sporting event?" It's a question we hear regularly. And with more than 100 years on the clock in organising and hosting events, we know how to answer it. Besides good accessibility (near the railway station, for example), an appropriate venue and a recognisable theme, there are more things to keep in mind. These are them:

Don't assume that your participants will already arrive in their sports outfits. Maybe they are coming from far away, or it is cold. And besides: after exercising, you want to take off those clammy clothes right away. Having enough changing rooms and/or refreshment areas is nice.

When you exercise, you get thirsty. So it is important to hand out enough water or at least make sure people have somewhere to fill their water bottle.

It's still the Netherlands, of course: and it can suddenly rain cats and dogs there. So make sure you also have an emergency solution such as tents or the possibility of moving indoors.

Healthy food makes sense, of course. After all, if you are organising a sports event, you can hardly serve a greasy snack. For instance, for the athletes, choose healthy carbohydrate-rich snacks, such as bananas, sweet potatoes or bites with quinoa.

Look carefully in advance at how the flow of participants will run. Moreover, think about enough first aid posts. And what do you do if someone becomes unwell - who do you call in?

Set yourself sustainable goals. Think about reusable materials or encouraging your participants to walk, cycle or take public transport. Or serve only water or smoothies and no soft drinks. And also focus on sustainable aspects such as inclusiveness. Need help? We like to think along with you. For instance, we have a collaboration with Academie Spelderholt. A number of students with disabilities regularly reinforce our catering team at conferences and events.
